The Jefferson Memorial stands as tribute to the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. The memorial was devised to show Jefferson’s significant role and contributions in a number of areas, including his noteworthy work as an architect. The memorial was designed to resemble the Pantheon of Rome with its colonnaded and circular style, and this was chosen specifically to reflect Jefferson’s personal taste. It also showcases the fact that he introduced this classic style into American architecture.

More importantly, the memorial pays homage to Jefferson’s extensive work as president, statesman, his contributions to the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and his founding of the University of Virginia. The Jefferson Memorial, located along the scenic Tidal Basin area, is an often used site for important celebrations and ceremonies throughout the year including the world renowned Cherry Blossom Festival.
